Each week 50 people come to Mires Beck to be involved in the many different activities that are carried out. The nursery operates on a semi-commercial basis. We take much pride in the quality of the plants that are grown. The production of good quality plants however is a means to an end and not the end in itself. Our primary purpose is to provide a pleasant, enjoyable environment where people who have a learning difficulty or disability can develop their skills, and increase their self-esteem and confidence. |

We provide training in partnership with East Riding College. This training includes NVQ level 1 in horticulture and also a pre NVQ course. Both courses are very practical and help to develop general work and social skills as well as horticultural skills. People work in groups of six under the guidance of a supervisor and with the help of a support worker. As well as herbaceous plants and wildflowers some people are involved in growing vegetables, cut flowers and dried flowers. The nursery site is 10 acres and there is much to do looking after the estate. Click on History for an account of how the site has been developed over the last 20 years. |
