“It’s a place to go, a place to like, a place to grow”
The quality plants that we produce are only a part of the Mires Beck story. Our primary purpose is to provide a pleasant enjoyable environment where people who have a learning difficulty or disability can develop their skills, increase their self esteem and confidence.
We are proud to work in partnership with East Riding College to provide training to many of the people who come to Mires Beck every day.
The History of Mires Beck Nursery
In 1985 a 10 acre field, with a broken down barn and 1 tree, was bought by Richard and Irene Tinklin. The aim was to start a nursery specialising in wildflowers. Their vision was to create a place where people who were disadvantaged in some way could come and be involved in a range of horticultural and gardening activities.
Working at weekends and holidays they slowly started to form the structure of a nursery. Some second-hand buildings were bought and put up, a glasshouse erected and a water supply laid on. Plants were grown and steady progress made. Over 5,000 trees were planted. These now provide pleasant shelter for people, plants and wildlife at the nursery.
A big step forward came in 1994 when Mires Beck Nursery became a registered charity (No 1038078). Trustees were appointed, a manager was employed and 4 young people began attending the nursery for training and work experience. Being a charity also enabled grants to be applied for and further improvements to the facilities have been made including, glasshouses, offices, teaching rooms and extensive garden areas.
Looking at Mires Beck today it is hard to imagine that just 5 years ago there was not even mains electricity on site.
We have now reached the stage where some 70 people each week come to the nursery, finding satisfaction, enjoyment and fulfilment from being part of a real working environment producing a wide range of superb quality plants.
What next
Plans are currently well underway to replace 2 old portacabins with a modern building at a cost of some £200 000. If you can help, or advise us on how to achieve this target please click .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
