Wildflower Plants of Yorkshire Provenance

There has been much interest in recent years in the growing of wildflower plants in a range of situations such as gardens, churchyards, and school grounds. They are also used in habitat restoration for roadside verges, hedgerows, field margins, woodlands and wetland.

Often concern is expressed over the origin, or provenance, of the seeds or plants used. There have been cases where seed has been imported from abroad. Even if it is the same species as that found in the U.K., the imported material can be significantly different and can adversely affect local populations of wildflowers.

When planting wildflowers, it is now generally accepted that it is best to use seed or plants that originate from as close as possible to the site.

At Mires Beck Nursery we grow plants from seed harvested from stock plants on the nursery. These stock plants were grown from seed collected from various locations in Yorkshire.

We have many years experience of growing wildflowers and we can offer advice on the most suitable species for a given location. Please contact us should you require any further information or advice.
