Mires Beck is a growing charity. We are now 31 years old and need to constantly invest in our operation and its infrastructure to support our aims in the work with adult day services in horticulture and our plant conservation work. We are keen to attract people who feel a compassion to support the charity’s work with adults with profound learning difficulties and people who have mental health issues who are recommended to us through Social Prescribing. We seek to encourage a membership which feels passionate about protecting the environment as we are and can help to support the efforts of the charity to conserve and protect our planet. Our wildflower production of some 150 species, are distributed across the county to large conservation projects and our Phragmites are used to create structure around the creation of wetland projects. Both of these elements of production are encouraging the increase in wildlife and pollinators in an aim to aid the diversity and regeneration in the county. Our tree nursery has grown to produce over 170,000 trees per annum at Mires Beck and we are looking to fund this expansion to our satellite tree nursery production to grow a further 150,000 trees at a new Pocklington based nursery. Within five years, Mires Beck will have grown over 1.6milion native British trees for Yorkshire and it is a legacy we are so proud to be directly involved in for the new Northern Forest scheme; being funded for landowners to help combat carbon emissions in our race to save the planet.
The charity location in North Cave of some 14 acres, houses 3 large aging glasshouses and 8 polytunnels, all of which need maintaining annually. Our main charity building which is the main community hub for everyone involved with charity, is limited in space and through COVID additional buildings have had to be rented to manage social distancing facilities for staff and service user bubbles. This enormous expense has impacted on reserves and being able to sustain the charity through these difficult times requires the kindness and support of many. The plant work allows us to take the opportunity to engage in larger scale planting projects to aid revenue, but equally needs production investment. Our aim with our satellite site is to become home to new service users in the area and the facility must be upgraded to enable us to bring more people to work with the story of tree production for the county.
If you would like to join our Mires Beck membership and support us to maintain the operations and infrastructure requirements at North Cave and our expansion to our chosen satellite nursery in Pocklington, we have arranged an affiliate members package as a thank you. Our membership price is £15 per annum.
The Benefits of Becoming a Mires Member
We will share member discounts we have sourced for places of interest, classes, catering, and retail merchandise
We would like to organise a steering group to look at the income from the membership and how we are directing the funds to each area requiring the investment. If you would like to be part of the steering committee, please indicate this on your returning member’s pack. We will be inviting members to quarterly meeting held at Mires Beck in North Cave.
Please help sustain a vital Yorkshire charity and provide essential work experience for adults in a caring safeguarded environment, where they receive genuine experience of a commercial nursery operation in a rural location where the additional learning of countryside management techniques and craft are also taught to service users.
