“THE ONE WHO PLANTS TREES, KNOWING THAT HE WILL NEVER SIT IN THEIR SHADE, HAS AT LEAST STARTED TO UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF LIFE” Rabindranath Tagore
Mires Beck Nursery is a registered charity and conservation site which provides practical horticultural work experience for around one hundred adults with learning difficulties, or disabilities every week at its 14 acre rural site in North Cave. The nursery grows award winning herbaceous perennials along with herbs and we are a specialist nursery for Yorkshire provenance wildflowers and trees. We are open to the trade and the public throughout the year.
With the current emphasis on planting trees and to help projects such as the new Northern Forest, we have increased our native tree production to 20,000 this year, and hope to double this figure to 40,000 in 2020. These will be for sale to estate managers, building contractors, landscape gardeners and garden centres, as well as to the general public. The advantage of buying our trees is that as they are grown in root trainers with a root ball, as opposed to being sold with bare roots, they can be planted pretty much any time of year. The root system together with fertiliser allows a strong start in the plant’s life. Currently, the number of native species available is over 25. We are working to become an assured supplier to both the Woodland Trust and HEYwoods in our aims to support local planting projects. Mires Beck has a contract with the Jacksons Food Group to grow around 8,000 mixed native and European varieties of trees a year until 2051, to be planted in and around Hull to celebrate Jacksons 200 year association with the city.
To celebrate our own 25th anniversary as a charity, we have recently planted 350 Silver Birch trees in our meadow, and these will be available for public adoption and for business to offset their carbon footprint by sponsoring a tree. Please contact Carla@miresbeck.co.uk to adopt a single tree for just £10 or to discuss multiple adoption. The trees will make ideal Christmas presents, and can be visited at any time to see how they’re growing. A certificate will be issued and the tree will be marked with the owner’s name during the summer of 2020. Within the existing woodland there are 2000 trees which we are auditing at present and we will release the grid reference for other tree sponsoring opportunities in the spring on our website.
A woodland walk is another feature at Mires Beck, and is very popular in the summer when visitors can obtain a children’s activity booklet from the sales hut. The walk is adjacent to the 4 acre wildflower meadow and willow maze which have been planted this year to enhance the onsite therapeutic experience for our service users. The woodland wildlife is being documented to improve our knowledge and education for all who visit the nursery. The National Trust has recently released an article on woodland wellbeing we thoroughly endorse in our conservation work with our service users. https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/press-release/woodland-sounds-boost-wellbeing-according-to-new-study
