Herbs

Our herb team grow and produce 50 varieties of herbs for the kitchen and the garden. Most can be used for culinary purposes, some are more for decorative uses. During the Spring and Summer we grow tender herbs such as Basil and similar annual species.

The Friends of Mires Beck have produced a Herb Recipe Book including many of the varieties grown at the nursery for sale in the retail hut. Our herbs are purchased by landscapers, garden centres and gardeners all over the county. Everyone in the Herb Team is involved in the production and care of our Herbs from propagation to the finished product. We take great pride in the quality of our plants, displays and presentation which is why customers come back time and time again.

How do we grow our herbs?

When it comes to our herbs we like to either buy in plugs or we will do our own propagation with the seeds- this involves doing division and splitting them. Between January and early April, we will sow seeds such as basil, chives, and parsley. Once the soil begins to condition from March onward, we will sow seeds such as coriander, dill, and chervil. Another way we do this is to take cuttings from around late summer to early autumn from herbs such as thyme, rosemary, and sage.

Vegetables & Fruit

2020 is the year that we decided to expand the growing of our own fresh fruit and vegetables. With the help from our volunteers, we were able to get started right away. We saw growing our own fruit and vegetables as the perfect opportunity to help our service users widen their horticultural knowledge as well influence them with a healthier lifestyle. Our aim is to use more onsite produce for our catering onsite and also have capacity to sell at our retail shop. Click Here to read more about our vegetables.
Our delicious vegetables are grown by our dedicated volunteer, Suzanne, who is the leader of our vegetable team.

Suzanne

Suzanne, the leader of the Vegetable Team, has been working here for 11 years, and she loves the whole site at Mires Beck, especially in the Summer when everything is in full bloom. She also loves the peace in the woods, and the butterflies in the meadows in and around the nursery. She says “it’s so not a garden centre, it’s unique”!

She describes Mires Beck as somewhere for people to learn to care, both for each other and the environment they work in. She loves seeing the people she works with learn and grow, and to be able to praise them for a job well done. Suzanne likes the shared sense of caring and having fun together.

Suzanne cares about the service users because she feels it’s important they have somewhere they feel valued and useful, which isn’t always the case in the wider world.
She challenges them to complete every task to the highest standard, be it filling compost, pricking out and potting on seedlings, or planting out into our raised beds.

Allotment Week

To celebrate Allotment Week, here are our service users harvesting vegetables that they, along with our volunteer and staff member, have grown to sell in our retail area! Come and see our delicious vegetables that they have all grown and harvested especially for you! We're open 7 days a week 10am-4pm. Music by www.bensound.com.
