Introduction

Trees are a precious natural asset and, as a natural carbon sink, are a vital part of the fight against climate change. Woodlands and forests will play an important role in the UK’s efforts to hit net zero carbon emissions by 2050, which is why the government is committed to planting 11 million trees by 2022. Funding for this scheme was announced by HM Treasury in the 2018 Autumn Budget.

By planting more trees and creating new woodland, land managers also provide a range of other ecosystem benefits such as preventing flood risk, soil conservation and boosting biodiversity.

Tree Nursery - North Cave

We are a young tree nursery which will grow approximately 350,000 trees annually from British seed and nuts procured from controlled supply which is batch coded for traceability to conform to plant health regulations. Trees are grown at our nursery location in North Cave and in 2022 we will start production at a second site in Wilberfoss near Pocklington in East Yorkshire to grow a futher 140,000 trees annually.
Our cell grown trees are grown in root trainers, which unlike bare root trees, better hold the water and the root ball is contained for ease of planting. They can therefore be held for longer durations in the pods during large planting projects, which is helpful to planting teams.
We have the capacity and operational knowledge to grow large volume orders for conservation projects, carbon emission offsetting projects and currently supply many county tree planting schemes under the Northern Forest project, Trees For Climate and the Community Forest programmes.

We are currently working with the Hull Butterfly City initiative growing Alder Buckthorn to encourage the Brimstone Butterfly amongst 24 other native varieties. (Please see our tree list below in Tree Prices.) Our tree planting numbers are shared with the Humber Forest management team to contribute to their Northern Forest planting target and we have recently planted another 2000 trees on our own conservation area onsite.
In March 2023 our Mires Beck Tree Nursery main polytunnel was dedicated to the work of the Humber Forest by the HM Lord Lieutenant Jim Dick OBE.

Tree Nursery - Pocklington

Our tree nursery in Pocklington is a satellite operation of our Mires Beck Nursery registered charity.
Trees are grown for wholesale in large volumes are in supply for contract orders. These are ususally supplied to funded woodland creation schemes and Trees for Climate incentives through government funding. The operation here sees the growing of all of our nut species trees and supports a 4 day service to users with learning disabilities in the growing of the trees.
The facility has a greenhouse and tree compound for growing cell grown trees and also provides the indoor space for the growing of Phragmites used in many conservation schemes and this year supporting expansion at North Cave Wetlands.

Tree Production

Our tree nursery is growing cell grown trees from British seeds and nuts in root trainers. Our trees are traceable and come with their own passport. We have capacity and resource to grow on large volumes for large scale planting and annual carbon offsetting projects. All of our trees are grown as part of our charitable green therapy operations teaching horticulture to adults with learning disabilities. We have over 100 adults per week working at our commercial plant and tree nursery and focus on trees has allowed us to expand the team members to help with this vital work.

We procure native seed and bring it on in seed trays.
When young trees have germinated we transfer to root trainers.
After time in the tree nursery, the trees are moved to mature outside.
Trees are sold to rural and urban projects.
We also provide more mature trees to the onsite retail stock.
