Compost Week at Mires Beck

Compost Week is the celebration of how composting benefits the environment, and is an encouragement for the UK to do more composting.

Compost is nutrient-rich which improves your garden by transforming your soil to give your plants a huge boost.
Did you know that the decomposed organic matter of compost is created by bacteria, insects, fungus, and other organisms eating it and excrementing it out?
At Mires Beck Nursery, we have recently been using Coir-based compost (which is based off coconuts) to conserve sphagnum moss that grows on peat soils. Peat soil is formed by sphagnum moss rotting, and it's declining due to people digging it up, so we are preventing the loss of sphagnum moss habitat by using Coir-based compost for our products. We will see how well it works at the end of the season!

The staff and service users/trainees of Mires Beck Nursery have also made newspaper pots that will decompose in the ground, rather than waste plastic pots.

Please come to our nursery to purchase our plants and your very own eco-friendly newspaper pot! Also, please donate to our Just Giving website to enable us to continue making our eco-friendly products.
All projects require fundraising and we are always looking for new sponsors and volunteers to help us realise the future aspirations to maintain the charity and help it to thrive. If you would like to help please contact us.
