Human Rights Day at Mires Beck
Human Rights Day gives us the opportunity to remind ourselves of the importance of human rights to rebuild the world we want.
The UN Human Rights' call to action "Stand Up For Human Rights", aims to engage the public, our partners and their UN family to do practical and inspirational action that can contribute to recovering better.
The theme of Human Rights Day this year relates to COVID-19, and it focuses on the need to build a better society by making sure Human Rights are central to our efforts for recovery.
These goals will only be reached if we are able to create equal opportunities for everyone, address the failures that have been exposed by COVID-19, and apply human rights standards to tackle exclusion, inequalities and discrimination.
We at Mires Beck have supported our service users by enabling them (before COVID-19) to work at our nursery and help us produce our products for our shop and other companies.
We have also been collaborating with the local councils and writing to MPs to try to safely reopen the service for our users. We will continue to work closely with families and the councils, to represent the needs of the service users at such a difficult time.
To join in with 16 Days of Activism and Human Rights Day, we have made our own brown ribbon to symbolise the importance of horticultural therapy to our service users. So many schools have been reopened to so many children, but authorities have been extremely cautious in decisions to allow any day services to open. While we understand that our service users are extremely vulnerable, we have been championing their need to come out of isolation to improve their mental health which has suffered during the last 9 months. Their need for their community and friendships is of paramount importance.
The staff and volunteers will wear the ribbon in support of the many parents who have felt without choice during the pandemic for their dependants right to attend their horticultural education in the communities they depend on.
