Remembrance Day for Lost Species at Mires Beck
Remembrance Day for Lost Species is a chance to explore stories of extinct and very endangered species, cultures and ecological communities.
This day was created in 2011 by artists, educators, scientists, historians and campaigners (including ONCA).
At Mires Beck, we will be making better decisions about what we do individually in our daily lives and at work, taking care to lesson any negative impact on the planet. Our logo symbolises our protection of the Great Crested Newt. We provided the trees for the Hull Butterfly City initiative to help preserve the habitat for the Brimstone Butterfly. We have planted over 2000 trees onsite to help expand our woodland to help clean the carbon footprint from our operation. Our woodland is the host to protected buzzards, and various wildlife live in our woodland. We produce thousands of plants sold to garden centres across Yorkshire which add oxygen to the air we breath and provide the pollen for our bees essential to our survival. Also, we sell bug houses and hotels to encourage the breeding of essential invertebrates in our gardens. We sell many designs of bird houses which are needed for the many species we see in our garden all year round.
Just being concious of our responsibility to work alongside the natural world is a great step forward, and there are many ways you can suppor this day by taking more notice of the world around you and the details we take for granted.
We ask our community to do the same, as we need as many people involved as possible to help increase our impact. Please make your contribution to a better environment by donating to us using our Just Giving website.
You can help preserve the Brimstone Butterfly by planting Alderbuckthorne in your garden. We at Mires Beck stock this species of tree. To help us with our trees, you could adopt one of our 2000 trees by clicking here. You could help us protect our woodland by volunteering to help us manage the habitat or make a donation to the nursery to help us maintain the necessary equipment to carry out these tasks. Bug houses and hotels are available at Mires Beck from £5 to £30 and can be made to order. Help create the habitat in your garden and buy a bird box on your next visit. Please support the nursery next spring season and visit Mires Beck Nursery, open all year to the public.
All projects require fundraising and we are always looking for new sponsors and volunteers to help us realise the future aspirations to maintain the charity and help it to thrive. If you would like to help please contact us.
