Our Classes and Workshops
We run public courses throughout the year at the nursery including willow weaving with Leilah Vyner, wreath making with Gillian Tomlinson and wood carving with Allen Stichler and will be newly introducing loom weaving and more throughout the autumn months.
Our classes are either held in our central Oasis building or in one of our working greenhouses. The course durations vary from one day classes to two day weekend courses. Please subscribe to the newsletter to see what is available or visit our What's On page to book.
We wish to best utilise our wonderful outdoor, peaceful environment to offer wellness activities and will also use the Oasis which has the benefit of Woolly Sheep sound clouds to help soften the acoustics.

Woodcarving with Allen Stichler (£110 for 3-day course):
Woodcarving with Allen will give you a great opportunity to spend 3 days carving with a local master craftsman, and take home a log carving for your garden or create a unique gift!
September 24th, October 1st, October 8th,
November 5th, November 12th, November 19th.
Times: 10am-3pm each day
Allen uses the same traditional methods (mallet and chisel) that have been used by craftsmen for centuries. All of his work is commissioned and each piece is unique. For around ten years he has had the privilege of holding carving workshops at Mires Beck, with both the public and the Nursery’s trainees; the serene and tranquil environment is the perfect setting for working with a natural, organic material like wood, and this calming atmosphere spreads to the participants on the course ~ making it a wholly enjoyable and rewarding experience for all.

Fiona Caley - Photographer
Fiona Caley is an East Yorkshire photographer and mixed media artist. She became self employed fifteen years ago after various life and work experiences. Being creative was no longer something she could ignore or keep as a hobby. Fiona started her career working as a commercial photographer, this took her across the country, however it also involved long and unsociable hours. Though the pay was excellent over time she developed her community work, to include working with women, schools, young people, disabled and individuals both locally and further afield.
At the heart of her creativity is a love of working with people to encourage space and time on activities to build skills, confidence and not least enable self-expression. Fiona was born on a farm, and for the last few years has combined her love of the landscape, working with people and creativity on a local farm open to people who benefit from time spent there. Fiona also spent time in a shipping container studio on an urban farm in Hull as artist in residence. “I am motivated by what both the land and creativity can offer. In my own life both have weaved their magic within me. Through sadness and joy they have restored, inspired and healed” She was a carer for her father for some years, and is now rebuilding her work portfolio to include regular group art and photography work across East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.
Fiona gained her industry acknowledged CEVAS personnel accreditation specifically for use in therapeutic practise
"During the course we will gather natural materials from the woodland area, have a go at photography, collage, printmaking, and creative writing all facilitated in a calm, safe, supportive, and encouraging environment. The sessions will be structured to cover all processes, and you are encouraged to attend all the sessions to make the most of this course. There will be a strong emphasis in using art and nature to improve your wellbeing." ~ Fiona Caley
Emma Bateman - Artist
Emma is a contemporary artist based in East Yorkshire and the founder of Emma Bateman Art. She studied Art at York College of Further and Higher Education in the late 1990s. Emma works mainly with acrylics on canvas, occasionally incorporating other mediums such as glass inks, mirror fragments, metal paint, glitter and other recycled objects to create a unique, textural collage effect.
The beauty and magic of nature provides a constant source of inspiration for the artist, particularly the Yorkshire landscape, its flora and fauna, and the changing seasons. 2020 was the year the artist took the leap to make art a full time living – a lifetime ambition.
Alongside painting, and having her own product range, Emma teaches art in schools across Yorkshire, holds private lessons for adults and children, and is booked for group private painting parties.
Emma’s hard work was officially recognised when she took home the award for Innovative Business of the Year at the Goole & Howdenshire Business Excellence Awards in February this year.
Nature, Art, and Mindfulness - A word from the artist
"11 years ago my long-term relationship broke down leading to financial pressures & my mental health started to suffer a result, art provided an outlet for my emotions and kept my mind occupied. It was a complete escape. I am passionate about helping others, and I want to be able to try to help other people who are suffering and share the benefits that art can have on a person’s mind and wellbeing. I will be sharing my skills and experience with others, we be experimenting with paint and printmaking. There will be a focus on colour and texture, and we will be using nature and the woodland setting to inspire us to see what flows..."
